Glossary

This glossary connects the names shown by hv to the objects an administrator operates. Use it when a Task, error or command refers to an unfamiliar object. The concepts chapter explains their relationships; the task chapters explain how to change them. Before using a reference in a command, confirm its object type and Pool rather than relying only on its display name.

Glossary
TermMeaning
AccountA human or API identity in one Silo; separate from dom0 root and VM operating-system logins.
ACLA grant of a Fleet role to an Account or Group on a supported infrastructure target.
CoordinatorThe Host holding xapi's Pool coordinator role; some commands retain the name master.
dom0Xen's privileged control domain on a Host. It runs the management operating system and toolstack.
Edgehv's proxy appliance VM and associated management state. Public-NIC handover is unavailable as a complete administration workflow in this release.
FleetThe infrastructure managed by one hv deployment, including its Pools and Silos.
GroupAccounts collected within one Silo for access management.
HostA physical machine running Xen, dom0, xapi and hv-agent.
ImageA Template presented as a VM boot source, owned by a Project or shared through a Silo or Catalog.
IOMMUOptional hardware address translation and isolation, required for PCI and SR-IOV passthrough. Without it, the Host runs dom0 in PV mode.
NetworkLayer-2 connectivity for VM NICs within a Pool.
PBDThe connection between a Host and an SR.
PIFA Host interface connected to a Network, including supported physical, VLAN or bond forms.
PoolHosts managed under one xapi coordinator.
ProjectOwnership container for a team's VMs, disks, Images, Snapshots and VPCs within a Silo.
PV / PVHThe supported dom0 modes. A requested mode change takes effect on reboot.
Release repositoryA signed release source with a root-key identity and channels; unrelated to VM disk storage.
RemoteA destination or source for backup data.
RetentionRules deciding which backup points remain, while preserving required dependencies.
SiloA tenant boundary containing Accounts, Groups and Projects.
SnapshotA point-in-time VM copy; it can depend on the same SR as the original.
SRStorage repository containing VDIs.
TaskA long-running operation and its progress, final state and result.
TemplateA VM definition used to create VMs.
VBDA VM's disk attachment at a device position.
VDIA virtual disk image stored in an SR.
VIFA VM's virtual NIC on a Network.
VMA virtual machine, distinct from a Template or Snapshot.
VPCA Project-owned private overlay Network; it does not supply routing or DHCP by itself.

When an error names a PBD, inspect Host access to the SR; when it names a VBD, inspect the VM's disk attachment. If several objects share a name, select by UUID or exact reference and explicitly name the Pool. This avoids directing a recovery action at the wrong resource.
